Guesthouse Shiro

The little artistic details stuck with me most, from the drawings to boxes filled with interesting stones. There’s a lovely Japanese minimalism to the place, with so much care in the small touches. The guesthouse is comfortable, quiet and beautiful, and the owners are a kind, helpful young family. It felt like an authentic Japanese experience, in a great spot beside the Kanazawa Castle Gardens and near the seafood market. Renting a bicycle there made exploring Kanazawa easy. This is the most memorable place I’ve stayed so far.

We only booked two nights and wished we’d allowed more time. Kanazawa’s main sights are all walkable from here, so we didn’t need public transport. The guesthouse is right outside Kanazawa Castle Park, and Jiro was friendly, easy to chat with, and full of local recommendations. The king room was beautiful and thoughtfully designed, with nice decorative touches throughout. Shared bathrooms were clean, and the shared kitchen and living room felt homey, a good spot for tea or coffee and meeting other travelers. There are umbrellas, rain boots and bicycles to borrow or rent. We used the umbrellas our first night, then got lucky with good weather the next day. My husband rented a bike and rode around the area and to the Asano River. I really enjoyed the room. Kanazawa is charming, with lovely sights and very nice people. I highly recommend adding it to your itinerary and staying here.

Take some time in the lounge if you stay here. I spent a while there with green tea, enjoying how quiet and peaceful it was. The house is 125 years old, with a beautiful interior, and it’s close to Kanazawa Castle and Kenrouken Gardens. The family running the place are polite. Pajamas, bikes and towels are available to rent for a small fee. We had a queen room with comfortable beds, and the showers were really comfortable too, with some kind of device that cools or dries you off. The walls are thin, so keep your voice down. I’d highly recommend the place, 11/10.

For the smaller double room, I’d bring earplugs for traffic noise, especially during a peak holiday season. Aside from that, the location is perfect for a few days in Kanazawa. The owners are attentive, friendly and very kind, and the whole guesthouse is spotless. I’ve never stayed anywhere cleaner. It’s LGBTIQ+ Friendly, and the futon mattress was such good quality. Thanks for that. I’d highly recommend staying here.
