Yukusa Ohsumi Umi no Gakko

Dinner was a generous BBQ, and we could bring our own extra food and drinks. The room was the headmaster’s office, with its own toilet and shower, plus a blackboard and chalk for reminiscing about school days. The school conversion also has camping and BBQ facilities, and it’s a really fun place to stay. The breakfast was my one complaint. It was very basic: plain rice in soup with a tiny amount of small fish, green onions, and one plum. Not even juice or coffee.

We spent one night in a classroom converted into a dormitory and enjoyed a morning walk along the shore. It’s an abandoned elementary school turned into a medium-term lodging facility on the Oshumi Peninsula, Kagoshima, in the far south of mainland Japan. The courtyard is part of the site, and there’s a small library. Breakfast is available with an advance reservation. It’s about an 80-minute drive from Kagoshima chuyo station.

The sea looked beautiful in the evening, sparkling in the sunset. We came for a camping trip, and the clean facilities were easy to use. In summer, there are summer sports to enjoy, and we had lots of fun in the gym with its balls and rackets. The shower rooms stay open 24 hours, and free hair dryers were a great touch. Amenities are available for a fee. We also had a three-year-old with us, and the kids’ room kept them entertained. It’s an easy place to spend the whole day. There’s a cafe too, and the gelato and coffee were delicious (￣▽￣;)
