HOTEL R9 The Yard Karatsu

The room was very clean and tidy, and the unit bathroom wasn't too small, so I could soak in the tub. Parking is free, and they provide a free frozen meal with a microwave in the room, which worked well with snacks and a drink. Looking only at the price, it isn't cheap. Each room in this container hotel is independent, so there's less worry about noise from neighboring rooms or hallways than in a regular business hotel. My main issue was the railway side: every passing train was loud enough to make the ground rumble. It's a local line and trains don't come often, but I noticed them.

The trailer room even had tires and a Saga license plate, which I found amusing. It's an easy walk from Yamamoto Station, with a 7-Eleven next door. Even when hotels around Saga City and Karatsu Station are booked, this place tends to have vacancies, a bit of a hidden gem. My room was spacious, clean, and had the expected amenities. The bathroom and toilet were average, though the water was a bit hard to flush, as the room's warning mentions. The free frozen meal from Fukuoka was tasty, unlike typical commercial options, and since it was available any time, it helped when I needed to catch the first train. I forgot to ask for chopsticks, then went to the front desk after 11 PM and got a very unpleasant look. I'm sure the staff were tired from lots of questionable late-night guests, but I would've appreciated a smile. The rooms and parking lot aren't connected. I walked over, but someone's car was parked right in front of my room, so maybe parking is first come, first served. The lot was quite a sight, with license plates from all over Kyushu, from Kitakyushu to Nagasaki and Kagoshima. At night it was dark and the room numbers were hard to see, so I tried the wrong door. It wouldn't open and someone came out, which was awkward.

My wife and I had been curious about this container hotel for a while, so we booked it when I had business in Karatsu. The room was bigger than expected, and the separate containers meant we slept well without hearing the neighbors. You can hear an occasional train because it's near the station, but it didn't bother me much, especially since trains run extremely infrequently. A 7-Eleven is right next door and a drugstore is about a five-minute walk away. We exchanged our breakfast vouchers for frozen curry rice and other items, and the coffee and tea service was great. If I had one suggestion, it would be to add a second chair. I'd definitely stay here again.

The room is compact, so bigger men might find it cramped, though the beds aren't too small. The reception staff have all been really pleasant so far, maybe they're well trained (^^). The food is frozen, but tasty, and having a 7-Eleven next door is handy.
