Yoyokaku

The shuttle from the train station was much appreciated, and the small communal hot spring bath was cozy and relaxing. Karatsu Castle is an easy walk away, so the location worked well for sightseeing. We loved the peaceful Japanese garden and were delighted to meet the owner, a kind man who lives on the property. A special thank you to the wonderful lady who looked after us. She served so many delicious courses with a warm smile and seemed incredibly strong and energetic. Both dinner and breakfast were highlights of our trip. Yōyōkaku felt more like a beautiful historic home than a hotel, and everyone made us feel so welcome. Thank you to all at Yōyōkaku for such a memorable stay.

One of the loveliest places we've stayed in Japan. The garden was beautiful, the food exquisite, and the collection of local ceramics was great. We were fortunate to meet the owner, who kindly shared what he knew about local potters and places to visit. Thanks for such a wonderful stay.

The room was comfortable and lovely, with a private garden, and the grounds were amazing. This tranquil ryokan is beautifully maintained, and the attentive staff clearly take pride in its 100-year heritage. The breakfast was great, too. After we parked, we nearly missed the entrance, but staff noticed us and showed us in. During check-in, the proprietress, wearing a kimono, saw me carrying a trash bag and took it from me right away. Another woman brought our bags. The proprietress gave us a tour in great English, then made tea in our room. Being served tea traditionally by a woman in a kimono in a tatami room that smelled of straw felt just right. Everyone was so hospitable, and the staff speak English. I'd love to come back!

The staff were wonderful without exception, and the food was excellent. This beautiful ryokan has fabulous rooms and a lovely garden. It's an easy, leisurely walk to the beach and castle, and Karatsu station is a 25-minute walk or a six-minute taxi ride away. I couldn't recommend it more.
