HOSHINOYA Karuizawa

The view is spectacular, and the atmosphere has a real sense of occasion. I’d say it suits visitors looking for a luxury stay and a rustic, authentic Japanese feel more than tourists generally. Service providers seem to be in short supply. I’d visit briefly, mainly to enjoy the onsen, which is only for hotel guests.

The grounds are beautifully kept, and the onsen felt magical. Even in the least expensive room, we had loads of space and everything was clean and comfortable. My husband and I found this the most luxurious stay we’ve had, and the restaurant’s nine-course meal was the most unusual and fascinating dining experience we’ve had in Japan so far. Highly recommend it. The staff were so friendly and attentive, even with a little language barrier. I’m surprised by how many people have left poor reviews. We’re grateful we got to spend a few days here during our Japan trip. 5/5 for us.

I really liked the nature walk. It helped me get a much better understanding of Karuizawa’s plants and wildlife. The activities and food were excellent, and the staff did their best to help. With its architecture, landscape, and calming natural light, the place is ideal for a peaceful break.

We were sad to leave and would love to come back, perhaps to try another Hoshinoya property. The hospitality had a lovely balance with tradition, and the onsen was very nice. Its “dark room” was especially interesting. There are lots of distinctive activities and amenities, too. Make time to explore the whole property, including the tea house, where little surprises are tucked away.
