We went off the beaten path for this stay, and it was absolutely worth it. The food was the best we had in Japan, by a lot. I could go on about it, and honestly it felt worthy of two Michelin stars. Our western suite was lovely, with a huge bathtub and spa area. The onsen spas were all wonderful and a must try. Every detail felt carefully done, and the whole stay was divine.

The private onsens were a real treat, especially the one with a sauna, and the free wine from 9 to 11 PM was a nice extra. Breakfast ended up being my favorite part. It came in a beautiful large wooden box, and every locally sourced dish was full of flavor. The vegetable stew with Manganji peppersManganji peppers was so comforting and made me feel at home. We stayed in a chic, modern Western-style suite with complimentary drinks. The tablet made it easy to adjust the lights and air conditioning. A friendly staff member greeted us and helped with our luggage when we arrived. Dinner was a wonderful French-Japanese blend made with fresh local ingredients. I especially loved the awabitake mushroom and the perfectly grilled beef. With just eight rooms, Sanso Amanosato felt like a quiet place to get away. I can't wait to come back for longer.

The bath area felt luxurious and was thoughtfully designed, and the rooms had plenty of space. Dinner was one of the best I've had. Every dish was prepared so well, the beef was cooked just right, and the seasonal matsutake mushroom was especially good.

After a month traveling around Japan, this countryside stay was just what we needed to relax. We had privacy throughout the day, including at the onsens, and the staff were very polite and took care of everything we asked for. The room and food were exceptional, and I think some of the previous reviews and comments give a misleading impression. To me, the property deserves a rating above 4.5, and the price is fair for what it provides.

With only eight rooms and private onsens, this small hotel was incredibly relaxing. The service felt like a true five-star experience. Breakfast and dinner are Japanese-French fusion, which made the meals an experience in themselves.
