We went for some rest and hiking, and the owner suggested taking a bus to Odaigahara national park for a walk in the UNESCO-recognized park. It was a fantastic tip. There are also several shrines and temples nearby to explore on foot. The food was amazing, with traditional Japanese dishes given a local touch. The owner, his family, and the chef served regional specialties, including freshly caught food at breakfast and dinner. Our room was large enough for our family of four, spotless, and well maintained. Asahikan is a family-run ryokan hidden in the mountains, and it has been operating for over 150 years. The owner and staff kept the magic of Japanese hosting culture alive, and our three-night stay was absolutely memorable. We were traveling with our two six-year-old daughters, who thought the place was like a fairy tale and kept looking for Totoro, their favorite movie character. The owner went out of his way to find Totoro cups and souvenirs for them. They won't forget their first trip to Japan, especially that thoughtful care. Our first vacation in Japan ended on such a high note here. I would recommend Asahikan to anyone wanting to experience Japan, enjoy nature, and go hiking in quiet surroundings.

Dinner and breakfast were exceptional, and the house itself is really beautiful. This traditional Ryokhan is in an old village that's almost deserted, so getting here is worth the trip. It's also a great base for visiting Odaigahara. Highly recommend!

The host made us feel so welcome and served amazing food. This is the most beautiful inn in the mountains of Nara, and I really can't recommend it enough. We'd love to come back on our next trip.

I didn't expect to find a place like this in such a remote town. It feels like a five-star luxury stay, but the inn is still uncomplicated and sophisticated, and the host is so kind and welcoming. A real gem. I also recommend stopping at the open café down the road for cake and coffee.

The hosts were so friendly and helpful, and made us delicious, generous meals. They also had plenty of suggestions for things to see and do nearby. We had a wonderful stay at Asahikan and would definitely return. Highly recommend.
