Amateras

We didn't want to leave. The place felt generous and relaxing, and there were hot water baths everywhere. We made good use of the different private baths, and had a wonderful stay with two nights of truly delicious dinners and hearty breakfasts. Dinner service was especially well handled. Since we came without a car, it was also great to have plenty of taxis at reception that could take us to trailheads and pick us up afterward.

You can see the stars from your own hot spring bath, and the view is incredible. From the balcony tubs, the mountains stretch toward Sakurajima in the distance. The room was spacious, with a wonderfully large bed, and the private bath made stargazing a real treat. The main building has a classic chalet feel, while the rooms have a modern look. Mini bars came with cocktail recipes and ingredients, all free. The terrace daybed also looks out over the mountains. Everything was very clean, with a faint mineral smell from the springs throughout the building. There are game rooms around the property and several outdoor family baths, including some about the size of small pools, all included. It's far enough from the city and dark enough to see the stars clearly from the baths. The value would be hard to beat anywhere else.

It was a quiet place to unwind for a few days, a little outside town, with lots of parking on site. The rooms were large and comfortable, with a good-sized bed. Guests can use the private baths whenever they like: four are open-air only, and four have both indoor and open-air baths. Our room had its own bath on the balcony, with very nice warm water. We didn't eat here, so I can't comment on the food.

We had a clear night and could see the Milky Way and plenty of shooting stars while soaking. Our private rock onsen room had an unobstructed view of Sakurajima in the daytime and the starry sky after dark. Everyone on staff was friendly and courteous, and made us feel at home. It was a lovely stay at Amateras, with interesting places nearby to visit, including Kirishima Jingu and Takachiho Farm.
