The road up is winding but well maintained, and there’s plenty of parking. Getting there without a car adds to the cost: my taxi from Kiso Fukushima Station was ¥5,800, and the ride to Harano Station the next day cost ¥4,000. For a quiet night in the mountains, with great stargazing, this spot was perfect for what I wanted. The food was fantastic. I had the dinner set but wished I’d chosen the course menu after smelling someone else’s. Breakfast bread was phenomenal, and I could happily have eaten six croissants. My room was warm, clean, and comfortable, with a mini fridge and TV.

The owner’s cooking is excellent, so I’d definitely get the meal plan, especially since it’s good value. I came here for solitude and great food after taking a break from the developed, touristy towns along the Nakasendo Trail. If you want to get away from it all, this is the place.

A peaceful escape from the city, right by a camping ground and beside the Kiso mountain trailhead. You can pick up hiking snacks at the camping ground’s 24-hour store next door. The owner is very kind. 😊

Dinner was prepared very well, and the host, who also cooks, was kind and welcoming. The hotel and rooms feel dated, but the rooms are clean and comfortable, with good beds and linen. Breakfast was decent too. It’s at the end of the valley, where there should be good stargazing and walks.

The host was so friendly, and even made breakfast for us at a very early hour. The food was prepared with a lot of care, and we loved his sweet dog, Kuromaru. The house sits on a mountain, with hikes starting right there, beautiful nature and views, and millions of stars at night. This was one of the best places we stayed during our three weeks in Japan. We had such a good time and really hope to come back someday. Thank you so, so much! 🏔️🙏✨
