My wife and I came to Kobe and stayed at Sha Sha Resort Suma Hotel. We got a good deal through booking.com, with breakfast included and free parking. The reception was attentive and welcoming, and they parked our car for us. Room 216 was great, especially the big bathtub. Thanks, everyone!

People unfamiliar with love hotels sometimes seem to expect something a little different. This is the sort of service a love hotel should provide, and I do wonder what kind of luxury hotel they have in mind. Even an average rural love hotel usually costs 20,000 yen a night. I also find it more unsettling when staff are overly chatty or greet you too much. That businesslike distance, where they just provide the help you need, feels right for these places.

I booked room 401 online on the karaoke plan for ¥8,000 per room, with rooms rated C rank or higher. I came here because the location worked well for a trip to Suma Aquarium, and although reviews on Google and Ikyu had made me a little nervous, my impression was very positive. There was no dirt at all in the interior. The bathroom fixtures looked well used, as other reviews said, but they were very clean. Karaoke (DAM) worked perfectly. I made a membership card that day, which meant meals were discounted and breakfast with a drink was free. It was incredibly cheap; the portions were small, but to me they were worth the price, so I can’t complain. If food matters a lot to you, I’d suggest eating out. When ordering breakfast on the monitor, I could choose a time in 30-minute intervals. The front desk staff and the people who brought meals were kind and polite, and I never had a bad experience. I was in the bath when my meal arrived, so they brought it twice without showing any annoyance. One thing did bother me: I couldn’t figure out how to lock the door when leaving. You can go out during your stay with a ¥10,000 deposit or by paying in advance, but the door was unlocked at check-in and I wasn’t given a key.

We chose this place for the private room with a bedrock bath, but found several insects even in the upgraded Type S room. The facilities had become unusable, so they moved us from Type A, then acted as if that made everything fine. Checkout was also frustrating: the woman in her 40s or 50s wearing black was very unhelpful.

Mold in the bathroom, breakfast that turned out not to be available, and a membership I couldn't sign up for after I'd already booked. I was told breakfast was included, then told no when I ordered it. A terrible stay. I won't come back.
