Kochi Green Hotel Harimayabashi

The location worked really well for me, close to the train station, Sunday open market, shops, and restaurants. The staff were helpful and quite nice. My room was small. The first one, on the 4th floor, faced a kitchen exhaust pipe on the neighboring building, so I could smell it and see what was happening from very close up, almost close enough to reach their windows. They changed me to a street-facing room, which was better, though the street noise was noticeable but manageable. The laundry setup is on the 7th floor, reached by stairs from the 6th. There was just one washing machine and one dryer, and the washer looked a bit dirty.

The staff were friendly, and the price was affordable. The location is good too, but the bathroom was not clean. I can deal with an old hotel if it’s clean, but Kochi green had black mold around the corners, behind the toilet, and in the gap by the mirror. The A/C was dusty as well. I wouldn’t recommend it.

The building was badly maintained, with black grime in the grooves of the fridge, including inside it, the window, and the toilet. There was dust piled in the room corners. Smoke smell was everywhere, even on the bed and pillows, where it had gone stale. This was the worst hotel we stayed in Japan, and quite a disgrace to the Japanese standard.

Parking cost extra, which felt especially bad given the high price for one person for one night. This was the worst stay of my week traveling around Shikoku, and my first impression of Kochi. The staff kindly showed me another room, but it had the same problems: it smelled bad, there was mold everywhere, even in the water boiler, and the bathroom unit smelled so strongly of pee that I couldn’t go in. It seemed like they only changed the bed sheets between guests and did no cleaning. I couldn’t have tea or morning coffee that day. I wouldn’t stay in this city again.
