The outdoor onsen was such a beautiful place to unwind, and dinner was a traditional omakase that felt like an experience on its own. Houshi ryokan has a peaceful, almost magical atmosphere, with long hallways and big windows looking out over a Japanese garden. It seemed small in the photos, but the property is actually spacious. Everyone was welcoming. The woman in the pottery shop spoke great English and was very helpful. I also met a lovely staff member whose name I missed. She took our photos and pointed out white herons perched in the trees on the hill. If anyone from the hotel sees this, please pass along my thanks and say hello to her for me. I really enjoyed our chat. I stayed one night in Awazu Onsen, and the setting felt unlike anywhere I've experienced in Europe. It's a quiet escape from busy cities and crowds, and it was just right for me. I highly recommend it.

The service, onsen, and multi-course dinner were all amazing, and the interior courtyard is gorgeous. The ryokan itself has a pleasing look, and I wouldn't mind if it felt even older. Some periodic upkeep is overdue, though, especially refinishing the wood and replacing carpets. Outside the ryokan, the town leaves a lot to be desired. It feels poorly planned and past its prime.

The staff were the highlight for us. They were so helpful and kind, patiently walking us through how things work at a ryokan, which was especially useful as first-time guests. The onsen was relaxing, and the kaiseki meals were beautifully presented with fresh local ingredients. Staying at Houshi Ryokan in Awazu Onsen, the legendary 1,300-year-old inn, felt special because of its history. Some parts are dated and a little ragged, though, and could use maintenance. The village is quiet and rather pedestrian, with little nearby for anyone hoping for lively streets or easy walks to shops and cafes. We'd come back for the hospitality and baths. If you're after heritage and a peaceful atmosphere more than modern luxury, it's worth experiencing.

The onsen bath was a perfect place to relax, and the service and food were impeccable. It's one of the world's oldest guesthouses, run by the same family since 718. Some areas are a little run down and could use renovation, but that didn't get in the way of a great experience. One of the best parts of my trip to Japan.

We came because the history is impressive: this is the oldest family business, with 46 generations over 1,300 years. The garden and outdoor onsen were lovely, and my room was comfortable. The facilities are a bit dated but still work. Food and service were standard.
