Hotel Hananoyu

Our guide told us Hotel Hana no Yu had been voted the 9th best ryokan in Japan by all the national travel agencies, and I can see why. This was my first ryokan stay, and it was incredible. The staff were very friendly, and breakfast was a big spread. We didn't have enough time to make full use of the facilities, but we did spend about 15 minutes in the natural onsen, with a beautiful view of the surrounding hills. The remote location is both a plus and a drawback. We heard there wasn't a convenience store nearby, but some of us found a 7-11 within walking distance, and there's a train station close by, so it wasn't too bad. I'm not sure if I'll ever get the chance to stay here again, but I look forward to whenever it happens.

Check-in was quick and smooth. The waiting lounge was pleasant and beside a restaurant with lovely views of the summer greenery. My room was small but just right for a solo traveller, and the massage chair was fantastic after a soak in one of the hotel's many onsen. The hotel is known for having more than 30 pools, though they were quite hot, especially those on the 10th floor. Both meals were buffet style and okay. Overall, I enjoyed my stay. The staff were courteous, helpful, and friendly.

This was our first visit to an onsen hotel, and it was a great introduction for our novice Australian family. We arrived a little late, but our son's Japanese wife and her parents, whom we were meeting for the first time, had everything arranged. That was fortunate because they could guide us on onsen etiquette. I had a soak before dinner and again before breakfast, and the water wasn't as hot as I expected. The buffet dinner and breakfast were more than adequate, and we enjoyed the curry at both meals. The package was excellent value.

The holiday day-trip onsen cost 1,500, which felt expensive, but it was very relaxing. Towels are included with admission. During my visit, the women's bath was on the 10th floor, with beautiful views and a relaxing bath. The water was clear and odorless, with minerals added to help you relax.
