What began as a side trip from Osaka ended up being one of the most memorable parts of our Japan visit. Guest House Kokuu was clean and well run, with everything we needed in the area. Ryochi was warm and welcoming, and very helpful with information and assistance. The optional breakfast set us up well for the day, and I’d happily recommend the chicken curry for dinner. For a visit to this peaceful, spiritual town, Kokuu is a great choice.

For early or evening walks, the guesthouse is close to the entrance to Okunoin and the mausoleum of Kobodaishi. We were four people staying one October night, each in an individual capsule, and all of us slept better than anywhere else on the trip, even compared with the temple we stayed at the next night. Each capsule has a privacy curtain, light, power socket, and room for a small bag. Everything was spotless, and Ryochi's home cooked breakfast and coffee were fantastic. He was incredibly accommodating, too. When our arrival was delayed because we got confused about which train to take from Osaka, he booked us a table at a nearby excellent izakaya. The value, location, and service are hard to beat. One transport tip: there are no weekends taxis from the funicular station after 4pm, and buses into Koyasan were about 30 minutes apart, so try to arrive before 4pm to have more options.

Our plans changed at the last minute, but Ryochi found us two spots in one of the mountain capsule pods. They were lovely and good value. His suggestions for Koyasan and for our next stop in Osaka were great, and the homemade dinner and breakfast were both lovely. Really good vibes all around, thanks!

The rooms were cozy and spacious, and being close to Okunoin made it easy to get around as a visitor. Ryochi san was incredibly helpful and hospitable, which made our stay a very positive experience.

The host was friendly, kind, and full of helpful information. The place was tidy and clean, and its location near the bus station and Okunuin cemetery was very convenient. My family and I had a pleasant two-night stay, and I’d recommend it to anyone visiting Koyasan.
