The vegetarian meals were far better than I expected, thoughtful, delicious, and beautiful, and the morning blessing and meditation with the monks made the stay feel authentic. Souji-in is in a working temple across from another temple compound, and the simple but comfortable rooms felt on par with a Japanese Ryokan. I loved my time in Koyasan, and Souji-in made it special. A few things to know: the beds and pillows are hard, the ceilings low, and most guests seemed to be gaijin. Dinner lighting is harsh and conversation can feel a little awkward. Still, walking out the door puts you close to some incredible experiences.

The autumn colors arrived just the week we were there, which added to a stay that had already felt magical. We were grateful to the administrators of Koyasan Shukubo Sojiin for opening the guesthouse and hosting our family. Tami was especially attentive, showing us around the temple and explaining how it works. We enjoyed the food, the onsen, the Buddhist ceremony, talking with the monk, breakfast, and a walk in the garden. It felt like more than a hotel. Even in a short time, experiencing Buddhist practice and the monks’ way of life on Koyasan affected us deeply. Thank you, Universe!

The morning prayer was a lovely part of the stay, and it was cool hearing the monk and translator talk about monastic life. We also appreciated being able to celebrate my husband's Kanreki there. The service was kind and friendly, and the food had so many delicious details. Those quiet, happy moments away from modern high-tech life and Wi-Fi felt like a real treat. Our bedroom was comfortable, with good mattresses on Tatami, and we slept well. We felt safe and at ease throughout. Thank you for making our time at Koya-san so memorable. We'd love to return someday.

The clean, spacious room and the onsen looking out over woodland were lovely, and the bath was empty when I saw it. The food and friendly staff were the standouts: a nine-course Buddhist vegetarian meal, almost Michelin-star level. Everyone was helpful and nothing seemed too much trouble. We joined the 6 am sutra with the monks, which was an experience, though we didn't actually get time with them, so don't expect much conversation. I loved my stay. In Koya San, try the night walk through the graveyard and the Goma fire ritual at Ekoin Temple, a key practice in Esoteric Buddhism.

After spending the night in a temple over 1,000 years old, I felt at peace. The hosts were incredibly accommodating, and the morning Buddhist service is a must.
