I spent almost a month here, and there were good and bad parts to the stay. The best things were the polite, friendly staff, the spa, and the welcome bar with free coffee and drinks from 6-9pm. The spa is nice, though cramped and crowded. Parking was reasonably priced, but you have to pay at the machine by cash or credit card, with no online option. If you don't have an expense account, you have to cover the cost yourself upfront, and a whole month adds up. For the first two weeks I was put alone in a small room with a bunk bed. It looked like a jail room in a nice reformation center. The laundry dryer was awful. It might be tolerable on a short holiday, but I have no patience for equipment that doesn't work. They need to replace it. Laundry was average priced, but the machines were busy because so many people needed to wash clothes. Breakfast was the worst part. It's free from 6:30-9:00pm, weekends included, but the cafeteria is far too small for the number of guests. You can end up sitting across from a stranger, even during the pandemic. They should use time blocks for groups and single diners, and maybe open half an hour earlier. Twice I waited 30 minutes, only to be told I had to share a table or wait longer. Other times I gave up because the room was over capacity. There are bigger and cheaper places in town. I'd make this my last choice, or never choose it at all.

The public bath was decent, the staff were helpful, and the rooms were clean and maintained. Still, compared with the Super Hotel branches I've stayed at in Kokura and Nara, this one felt really old and dated. The location was okay.

The rooms are filthy. Once steam from the bath rose, the stains started dripping off.

I was extremely disappointed with my stay at Super Hotel LOHAS Kumamoto Natural Hot Spring. I'd requested a non-smoking room when I booked, but was assigned a smoking room. The cigarette smell hit me as I stepped out of the elevator and was even worse inside the room. I went straight to the front desk to ask for a non-smoking room, as requested in my booking. The staff member said the hotel was full and couldn't change it. When I pointed out that I'd clearly asked for non-smoking, she replied dismissively, "You can request a non-smoking room, but we don't necessarily have to fulfill your requirements." That disregard for my booking left me frustrated. The smoking room made the stay unpleasant and uncomfortable, and the hotel showed no good faith in honoring my request. After such poor service, I won't stay here again. If you expect your room preferences to be met, I'd think twice before booking.

My husband and I regretted checking in almost immediately, even though we'd booked two nights. The facilities felt old and worn, and the hot spring was quite small. During the cold, windy winter, it took a while for the room aircon to warm the space. I was surprised by how obsolete and poorly maintained the hotel seemed, especially given how much the city has spent promoting tourism to other East Asian countries.
