OMO5 Kumamoto by Hoshino Resorts

I’m only 170 cm, but I kept banging my head in the living area and on the way up to the raised bed. There’s hardly anywhere to stand safely, and I eventually felt nervous even going into the room. I ended up sitting on the stairs to avoid hurting myself. This was the YAGURARoom type, so if you’re around my height or taller, think carefully before booking it.

The bathroom and toilet were roomy, even by American standards, and the room was clean. The location was great too. That’s about where the positives end for me: the raised bunk setup was awkward and risky. There are two twin beds above and a futon below that can work as a second double bed or a place to sit and watch TV, but we had to crouch constantly to avoid the beams. Getting in and out meant crawling, and the stairs felt especially dangerous when going to the toilet in the dark. There’s so little floor space that the door opens out into the hallway. Even the hotel put up a “Watch Your Head” sign and added a soft bumper where guests often hit their heads. If you’re under 5’3 or 160 cm, or only staying one or two nights, it may be manageable. Check the photos first, and use the room at your own risk.

I had a great visit, especially enjoyed the terrace and its nice view, and the cafe service was good. The rooms are beautifully designed, and you can tell a lot of care went into them. I did hit my head a few times climbing up to the bunk bed, though.

The restaurants downstairs were all tasty, and OMO5 is in a really convenient spot. You can walk to Kumamoto castle and the shopping streets in just a few minutes. Even though it’s on a main street, it stayed quiet at night, so I slept well. The room felt warm and cozy, with a Japanese style mixed with some modern design. The beds were soft and comfortable too. I had a blast and would definitely recommend staying here in Kumamoto ^_^!!
