My travel planning app still flags this hotel for its low rating, but I think it’s perfectly serviceable if you want a no-frills stay. My five out of five takes the reasonable price into account. The staff were nice and the bed was quite large. The room wasn’t huge, though that’s common in Japan. Location depends on what you need. It isn’t right beside Kumamoto train station, but public transport is within walking distance, as is a large shopping district and Kumamoto Castle. I was allowed to use the sento, an artificial onsen, at what I expect is a sister hotel across the road. It was free, but I had to pick up a card at reception. Breakfast wasn’t anything special, but there were options beyond toast and marmalade.

The location was great for my two night business trip. I don’t mind a place being old, and the area around the bed was clean, but the room felt a little incomplete. Amenities are on the first floor and guests have to pick them up there. On my first day, I found an opened toothbrush standing in a cup in the bathroom, along with what looked like a used body towel hanging there. I wondered if they were being reused, though they may simply have been missed during cleanup. Either way, it left me unsure about the room’s preparation. Breakfast was neither good nor bad, but it was edible. The yogurt, milk, and boiled egg gave me some protein, though the granola was a bit damp. There are no coffee shops or cafes open nearby in the morning, so I think the breakfast is better than getting something from a convenience store.
