The meals were outstanding, every dish carefully made and showing the chef's skill. It was the best Japanese cuisine I've ever had, honestly worthy of Michelin recognition. The Owner was warm and genuine, which made the stay feel special. We spent two nights at Kakiso and found it deeply relaxing. The house is a beautiful example of Japanese architecture. Our spotless room had a tatami living area and two comfortable single beds in the bedroom. Sitting on the tatami brought a sense of calm. The Japanese garden, with pine trees and koi in the pond, was beautiful too. I loved looking out at the sea from the second floor during quiet moments. It's a hidden gem, and a stay here is one you won't regret.

Whenever I travel to Kunisaki in Oita Prefecture, I stay at Kappo Ryokan Kaikisou. I love the peaceful Japanese garden, the filling and healthy breakfast, and the bath's great view. The landlady is attentive and always smiling.

For dinner we had a pufferfish course, with thick sashimi, fried chicken, hot pot and rice porridge. There was plenty to eat, and next time we'd like to try the seafood. The building is old, but the rooms are roomy, and you can watch the sunrise from the hot spring.

The seafood, all caught in nearby waters, was satisfying in both quality and quantity. The retro feel took me back to the Taisho and Showa eras, and I'll definitely return when I need a break from reality. One thing did bother me: the family bath is fully visible from outside, and I felt it needed some kind of screen.
