There are convenience stores, Welcia, and other shops nearby, and the town has become livelier than when I was a child. There are places to eat, though getting into a local restaurant on a weekend could be tough without a reservation or a wait in line. They’re closed on Sundays. An older couple I didn’t know remarked, “What a strange place we’ve come to.” The building is old, but it seems clean. The Wi-Fi is slow, and I wondered if that was just how it is in town.

The window in my room was cracked all the way across, and I wondered whether they could even repair it. The trash can was tiny, too. The carpet is old enough that slippers feel essential, and the facilities overall are dated and uncomfortable. When I got off the elevator, I was hit by a hard-to-describe fishy smell, almost like animal odor, that felt out of place. The bath water gets extremely hot, so be careful when filling the tub to avoid a burn. This isn’t what I’d call clean by today’s hotel standards. I think the price should be about 20% lower.

The food was delicious, and the staff were kind and down-to-earth.

The biggest problem was the heating. There were several fan heaters in the hall outside the room, which gave me a bad feeling, and there was an electric heater in my room. By morning, when it had gotten colder outside, the room felt cold and the air conditioning wasn’t working well. The showerhead was really weak and seemed like it came from the Showa era. The room and bathtub were both small, and the shower curtain kept sticking to me. It’s a very old-fashioned hotel. The front desk also seemed to be only half functioning. When you go out or check out, you’re basically told to leave your room key on the front counter. What about security? It felt scary.

I liked the warm-colored main light, and the desk and bedside lights could each be adjusted to different brightness levels. The yukata looked new and was comfortable. The building is old, but my room was relaxing and had been cleaned thoroughly. Everything except the floor was spotless. The receptionist was attentive and very helpful. Paying online was a bit of a hassle since they only take cash, but the price was cheap, so I was okay with it.
