Niseko Tabi-tsumugi Backpackers

Tabi Tsumugi is a short walk from the center, though just outside the small town, and the price is higher than at other hostels I tried. I still felt it was worth it. Ryo was helpful with local information and even offered free rides to trailheads or other places, including very early in the morning. It was the nicest hostel of my four weeks in Japan. The dorm bunks had plenty of room and head space, and the mattress, pillow, and blanket made for a comfortable sleep. Shared areas were clean, organized, and decorated in Japanese style, with a lovely view of mount Yotei.

Happy 15th birthday, Tabi Tsumugi! You’ve made it into something really special, Rio. I enjoyed the dormitory last year and my private room this season just as much. Meeting people from all over the world is part of what makes it so special. Thanks for another pleasant stay!! 🥁🤖🎯

Ryo-san was generous and really knows the area. He suggested a few cycling routes, and each one turned out to be a joy. A few days after I’d left the hostel, I got a flat tire while out riding, and he was ready to come rescue me. That kindness makes you feel looked after. The hostel is very clean and comfortable, near the station, a great coffee shop, and restaurants. From the living room, the view of Mt. Yotei is unbelievably picturesque, and there’s a special sense of community among the travelers you meet there.

We only had two nights here, and wished we could have stayed longer. Ryo was the highlight, so friendly, helpful, and accommodating. If you don’t have a car, his multiple morning shuttles make getting to the ski area easy. The place had everything we needed for a comfortable visit, and the rooms were clean. Restaurants, groceries, and the train were all an easy walk away. He also seemed like a great cook, and if you’re lucky you might get to try something he’s made. I’d stay again if I’m back in the area.
