We stayed at Umashiyado Totoya Ryokan two years ago, and being back in Japan made me think of it again. We tried another ryokan this time, but the experience didn't come close. The meals at Umashiyado Totoya Ryokan, both breakfast and dinner, were unbelievably good and still memorable. The host and staff made us feel at ease, and I slept really well there. Only regret is that we booked just one night. I'd happily stay there again.

The staff were friendly enough, and when we chose to leave, they were completely agreeable. We picked this hotel after reading Google and OTA reviews, booking without dinner because we planned to eat at a nearby izakaya. Finding the front desk was confusing, and we had to wander around looking for it. The bigger issue was the rooms, 201 and 202. Room 201 had a strong smell like pet urine; the other room was less intense but still unpleasant. One person in our group broke out in hives within minutes. We wouldn't recommend staying here.

The food experience was amazing, easily 10/10. We made hand rolls and nigiri, had bowls with crab roe, barbecue crab, and crab hot pot. Everything tasted great. The older women running it were so friendly and sweet. They offer sea kayaking in summer, so I'd like to come back for that.

Especially for Muslim travelers, this Ryokan is a great choice: they provide Muslim-friendly meals and a private bath. The staff are really friendly too.
