The staff were pleasant, and the location in Gion was decent, with most things within a 15-20 minute walk of central Kyoto. The rooms are very large, so it could be good value for a big family or group of friends sharing. For just the two of us, though, it felt expensive for what we got. We’d hoped for a traditional Japanese inn, but the place felt more like a dreary, run-down motel. It’s a large property with lots of rooms and an elevator, and the atmosphere just wasn’t great.

The food was amazing. We had the tasting dinner and breakfast. I wasn’t prepared for what was served, but I ate it all and was glad I did. The staff were attentive and forgiving of us dumb Americans making an effort. Several temples and shrines are nearby, so you can walk to the sights and be glad you did. There’s also a touristy shopping area for local items. If you’re planning a Kyoto trip, stay here.

The traditional breakfast is worth trying. It’s a bit pricey, but the quality, presentation, and experience made it worthwhile. Our spacious tatami room was peaceful, with comfortable futon bedding and soft pillows. Yasaka Shrine is just behind the ryokan, less than a three-minute walk away, and the setting felt like a full immersion in Japanese culture. This was our first ryokan stay, and a memorable one. The staff greeted us with exceptional politeness and showed us around the room, explaining its layout and amenities. There’s no onsen, which was the one downside, but it was a wonderful introduction to a relaxing cultural stay in Kyoto. Highly recommended.

The traditional futon rooms made the stay special, and breakfast was sumptuous. The staff were friendly and helpful, anticipating what we needed before we asked. I’d read other reviews calling them rude, but that wasn’t our experience. Highly recommended if you want a traditional stay in the heart of Gion.

This was the biggest place I stayed in during my Japan trip, about the size of a small apartment to myself, which was a great experience. The staff were so great, and the breakfast was beautifully done and tasted great. There’s a shrine and a park nearby for a walk, and great restaurants only 5-10 minutes away on foot. I’d love to stay there again if the opportunity comes up.
