We spent five nights here and had an amazing stay. The staff at the restaurants were helpful too. At Forni, the assistant manager, who I believe was named Jumpei, told us about Kyoto’s distinct water, high-quality sake, and tofu. We appreciated what he knew. The staff throughout the hotel were friendly and went out of their way to help, with a high level of hospitality and attention to detail. Our room, the central garden, and the spa area were all immaculate and made the stay unforgettable. We look forward to coming back.

The spa and onsen were a serene place to relax, and the service throughout was warm, professional, and remarkably attentive. Staff went out of their way to make the experience personal and memorable. The spacious, comfortable rooms are beautifully designed, with thoughtful details. The setting is peaceful and breathtaking, bringing traditional Japanese elegance together with modern luxury. Its location makes historic Kyoto easy to explore while still offering a quiet retreat. Hotel The Mitsui is a destination in its own right, and one of the most extraordinary hotels I’ve experienced. Truly world-class, and a must-stay in Kyoto.

The underground thermal spa was a real highlight for me. Water sounds and occasional mist from the ceiling made it feel like a proper retreat, and it ranks among the best destination spas I’ve tried in Japan. I also liked the private options here: the before-hours visit to Kiyomizu-dera lets you see a famously crowded place in peace. It costs quite a bit and books up fast, but felt worth it for that experience. The tea ceremony is another good way to get a taste of Japanese tradition. The setting is especially appealing if you’re into history. Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto sits across from Nijo Castle, in a quiet, safe, prestigious neighborhood. Nishiki Market is close, yet the hotel feels tucked away from the city bustle. Its grounds have a long history, and arriving through the 300-year-old Kajiimiya Gate gives a sense of that. Check-in comes with welcome tea in a calm lobby overlooking a carefully designed courtyard. Even in winter, the dormant garden and architecture are beautiful. It manages to feel both like a top-level resort and a private historic estate. Service is impeccable, with real respect for the heritage, and the property has earned three Michelin keys. It’s a costly stay, but the privacy and wellness facilities make it stand out among Kyoto’s luxury hotels.

Wonderful in every respect. The setting is beautiful and the location is fantastic, but it was the staff who made this a memory we’ll always treasure. Their care and attention to detail were clear throughout, with a warm, family-like welcome and a real commitment to doing things well. Everyone deserves recognition for their dedication, especially Sono Masuda, the Training Manager. She treated us with such grace and generosity, and went out of her way to help. That says a lot about the leadership here.

Kyoto and The Mitsui are already high on my list for a return visit. I’m so grateful for this stay. It was my first trip through Japan, and this extraordinary property felt like a dream, exceeding what I’d hoped for. What stood out most was the team. The Front Office Manager deserves congratulations for building such a strong group, and the Concierge team made a restaurant reservation for us with no fuss. I also had the pleasure of meeting Sono Masuda. She’s the kind of manager any employee would hope to have. I’ve worked within The Luxury Collection, and I can say I wish I’d had training and service standards like these. The location is stunning, and the welcome was lovely from the start. Check-in in the lounge was seamless, then we enjoyed a traditional tea ceremony that made us feel immersed in Japanese culture and right at home. It was the best check-in experience I’ve ever had.
