Apartment GION

The shower and tub were incredible, and there was plenty of space for our family, including our two teenage boys. The house was also perfectly placed between the older and newer parts of Kyoto. We recently spent four nights in the Gion House, and everything was fantastic. Junko, Curtis, and the whole team kept us informed, offered excellent dining recommendations, and made the space a wonderful place to stay. We’d absolutely choose it again on a return visit.

We rented both units for our family of six and had plenty of room to relax after days spent walking around and exploring. The Gion House sits on a quiet side street in the heart of Gion, steps from museums, matcha shops, restaurants, and shopping. I highly recommend it. The house is divided into two apartments. The lower one has a spacious bathroom with a stone tub, a washer and dryer, a full kitchen, a living room, and two bedrooms. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, a living area, a kitchen, a bathroom, and access to a roof deck. Both units are designed like traditional Japanese homes.

The Gion House sounds like one of the highlights in Photolator’s upcoming Kyoto photography guide. It’s a traditional machiya in Kyoto’s historic geisha district, and the two Photolator photographers have captured its tatami rooms, sliding shoji doors, peaceful inner garden, and smaller architectural details. The book promises beautiful images and tips for photographing this distinctive home, learning about its history, and exploring the surrounding streets of Gion, especially at golden hour. Photolator keeps inspiring travelers and photographers, and this guide sounds like it will be a useful resource for anyone visiting Kyoto with a camera. The Gion House should be one of its standout features, and more than just a place to stay, it offers a glimpse of old Kyoto’s elegance and cultural richness.

We were able to make our own breakfast and do laundry midway through our trip, and the amenities were generous. The beds were comfortable, the bath was great, and the shower had terrific water pressure. Checkout was easy, and Junko kindly let us leave our luggage at their office down the street while we went out for the day. The upper level of The Gion House was a terrific home base for exploring Kyoto for a few days. We stayed in late May this year, and Curtis and Junko were professional, responsive, and friendly from our first online inquiry about availability through checkout. Their binder full of house information and restaurant recommendations was very useful. The machiya is beautifully renovated with careful attention to every corner. We loved the little collection of books about Japan in the living room, the gorgeous blue and white checkered glass in the window, and possibly the most comfortable couch I’ve ever sat on. We highly recommend it.
