The location was the one good thing, with a ring of attractions reachable in about a 30-minute walk. But being low down near street level meant street noise was unavoidable. Service was nonexistent. The owner left me waiting outside for ages while checking in people who arrived after me, then spoke to me like a child and asked for the tax a second time after I’d paid. The room was bare bones and the walls were thin, which I could accept, but my bedding was full of dust balls and an awful amount of other people’s hair. Maybe it had been dragged on the floor, or maybe the dust collector hadn’t been emptied.

The bed was thin and itchy, the shower water stayed ice cold except for occasional moments when it got a little warmer, and noise came through the thin walls from the busy road right beside the room. I also felt watched and pressured by the owner the whole time. This was easily the worst part of my two-week trip to Japan. I don’t think it’s worth even a quarter of what a normal hotel costs.

It’s not fancy, but for a young traveler like me on a shoestring budget, it was a good deal. The tatami was comfortable, the place was very clean, and the owner was friendly and kind. The location was good too, close to Kyoto station and some nice restaurants.

The rooms are tiny, the futons are thin, and the bathrooms are cramped. The owner wouldn’t give us extra futons to make the already thin bedding more comfortable. She kept watching us closely and reminding us to turn the taps off properly, like we were kids. It felt like a house that should be for a family had been turned into a 10-room hotel. If you want to get some sleep, saving money by staying here isn’t worth it.
