The futons were a delight, and all of us slept exceptionally well. This over-100-year-old traditional machiya was the best place we stayed on our whole trip to Japan. Rieko gave us a warm welcome, took time to answer our questions, and explained everything clearly. We had no trouble communicating in English. You can see the small garden from the bathroom, and we enjoyed sitting on the balcony when the weather was good. The place was extremely well kept, with thoughtful touches that suited autumn, including a kakejiku decorated with maple leaves. It felt like a little oasis, in a perfect location. After we left, we realized we’d forgotten a few things. Rieko promptly arranged to have them delivered to our next hotel. Thank you again!

The host met us when we arrived and responded promptly whenever we had questions. Gion Kyuraku is a carefully maintained traditional machiya in Kyoto’s historic Gion district, combining old character with modern conveniences. The futons were comfortable, and the private garden gave the house a peaceful feel. There’s a fully equipped kitchen and laundry, so it would work well for a longer visit. Its location also makes it easy to reach places like Kiyomizu Temple and Kawaramachi Street. A memorable, authentic Kyoto stay with wonderful hospitality.

Rieko was a wonderful owner, both helpful like a concierge and kind like a friend. Our family of five felt very comfortable in the house, using the two upstairs rooms, one with a single bed and the other with three, plus the downstairs office with one bed. The decoration was beautiful, and the beds were so comfortable we could barely get up in the morning. The house itself is lovely and gives you a real feeling of Japan. It’s within walking distance of many temples, and Kyoto train station is about a 15-minute bus ride or 10-minute cab ride away. I’d absolutely recommend it to friends visiting Kyoto.

The neighborhood was wonderfully quiet, and getting around Kyoto was easy. We loved staying in this ryokan house, and all the thoughtful details made it a really comfortable place for us. I’d happily recommend it to couples or families who want a more traditional Japanese stay.
