Guest House hachi - Hostel

The owner thoughtfully arranged a tea ceremony for us in the Japanese-style room upstairs, and we had a wonderful time in that lovely space. Thank you, Chie-san 😌🫶 The guesthouse was exceptional in every way for us: the location, accommodation, and staff were all great.

Over six weeks of traveling in Japan, this was the stay I remember most. Guest House hachi felt like home, with plants, free coffee, and laid-back, friendly staff. We had a twin room with all the amenities provided, and everything was very clean. It also seemed to attract great fellow guests. The neighborhood is calm, with Japanese restaurants of all kinds and hot springs nearby. Getting around was easy: Kyoto Station is three minutes by train, the bamboo forest is 15 minutes by train, and there are lots of temples around. See you again soon!

The place has a charming mix of traditional and modern style, and the facilities were in good shape and worked well. It was clean and comfortable, with plenty of free amenities. hachi’s staff were warm and friendly, so I felt at home as soon as I checked in. Most of the other guests were courteous and friendly too. The location suited me well. It’s in a quieter part of Kyoto, a little away from downtown, where I could explore the busy areas and then come back to unwind. There’s a train station just a few minutes away, and some lovely little cafés nearby. I stayed here on a friend’s recommendation and was glad I did. The only small hitch was waiting for a shower once during a busy spell. That seemed to depend on how many other guests were using them, so it’s good to be flexible, especially with family groups. I’d recommend hachi and would love to return on another Kyoto visit.

If you’ve ever wished you could stay somewhere that feels like the best place on the planet, this might be it. It’s a home base for seeing Kyoto, but also somewhere you can feel at home for a while. The place has a lovely balance of calm and character. It’s outside the city center, which means you get to experience a quieter, more peaceful, and still very personable side of Kyoto. The popular sights are accessible too, but the neighborhood gives you a chance to see what non-tourist Japan feels like, with the comforts and connections of an integrated environment. The helpers rotate regularly and come from all over the world. They live in the guest house, keep things clean, and are there if you need anything. Travel is also about the people you meet, and this is a great chance to connect with different perspectives and learn about Japan from people around the world. I can’t recommend it enough. I bet this is exactly the place you’ll wish you’d stayed on your trip. :)
