For a budget traveler, this is probably among the cheapest choices in Kyoto, and you get a place to sleep with little else. There are showers, bathrooms, a laundry machine with a dryer that’s free to use, and a refrigerator. There’s no kitchen or food prep space, though, and the bathroom, fridge, and sinks could have been cleaner. The residential neighborhood is peaceful, and the building has a refreshing traditional character. But it’s quite far from the metro, famous temples, and supermarket. One major hassle: if you arrive in the afternoon, you’ll need to leave your bags at the hostel unsecured and return later, or carry them around all day until check-in in the evening when the attendant is there. It’s super inconvenient. I understand one person may be running the place and have other obligations during the day, but this needs to be sorted out.
