Guest House Machiya Tsubara Gojozaka

The location made it easy to spend days exploring Kyoto on foot, starting right from the door. It’s on a quiet side street but close to a bus station and other public transport, with convenience stores, cafes, and restaurants within five minutes. Eri and Koji were thoughtful and kind, helped with restaurant reservations and sightseeing suggestions, and Eri welcomed us and explained the house and its amenities in detail. This machiya is a hidden treasure, with traditional charm and modern comforts. The shower and Japanese toilet are contemporary, and the kitchen has what you need for a simple meal or breakfast. From the tea room, you can look out over a beautiful Japanese garden, and there’s a private onsen for your own use. The round tub fills at the press of a button. Our heartfelt thanks to Eri and Koji for an unforgettable stay. Worthy of a sixth star.

A beautifully refurbished machiya-town house, cozy inside, with modern toilet and bathroom facilities. There’s also an open-air bath tub. Highly recommended.

I’d like to stay here again. The room’s nostalgic feel and the open-air bath made it a very relaxing stay. There’s an induction cooktop and sink, plus glasses and dishes for simple cooking. I especially liked that the bath fills and reheats automatically. It’s on a narrow road, but seemed a little busier than usual, maybe because it was Golden Week.

This Kyoto machiya has a nostalgic feel and is so comfortable it starts to feel like a second home once you settle in. A very relaxing, comfortable room. The structure does have a lot of steps, though, so it may not suit someone with weak legs.
