I loved the traditional Japanese style of this place, with its seven guest rooms. The owner has drawn the signs and information sheets beautifully, and there are shared spots for reading manga, using a laptop, cooking, and washing up, plus a fridge. You can borrow things like converter plugs, extension cords, and heaters for free; bicycles, laundry, and yukatas cost a small fee. In winter, the hallways get very cold, so using the shared areas in the morning wasn't comfortable. Also, the ceilings are low. I got used to ducking, but still bumped my head dozens of times.

The photos really do show what it’s like. This lovely old-style home is full of charming details, and Yuki, her daughter, and the staff were kind, generous, and patient with us. They made us feel welcome and had a useful map of nearby restaurants, cafes, and attractions, along with helpful suggestions whenever we asked. We’re so glad we spent our first few days in Kyoto here. Looking forward to coming back.

The owner Yuuki speaks excellent English and was welcoming and very helpful. The place is good value and well located, with easy access to the main temples and sights. You can walk to both the Imperial Palace and Philosopher's Path.

Waraku-an was charming, with a peaceful room and a lovely central garden, and the price was great for such a beautiful place. The staff were friendly and accommodating with our baby, and shared useful advice and recommendations. It was also a nice area to explore on foot, with plenty of good food nearby. I can't recommend it enough.

We spent one night here during a longer Kyoto trip for a wedding, right in peak cherry blossom season. The price was unreal for such a lovely, authentic traditional homestay. Front desk staff were welcoming and spoke great English. The rooms were spacious and warm, and there’s a nice zen garden. Mind your head if you’re over 6 feet!
