Kotohi Machiya Holiday House

The house felt cozy, and I loved its look. It’s a bit far to walk to Kyoto’s main areas, but catching a bus to get around is easy.

Getting around was convenient, with the train station nearby and McDonald's, convenience stores, and burger places close by, so finding breakfast was easy. The guesthouse is down a one-way alley, though, and arriving in daylight makes it easier to find. We checked in at reception, where we got the electronic code and the instructions. There were six adults and one child in our group, and the space worked for us. With all adults it might feel cramped, but the small second-floor living room was nice for relaxing. It’s clearly a renovated house, and it was clean and comfortable. The residential area was quiet at night, and we all slept well. The kitchen had an oven, microwave, induction cooker, and kettle. There was a shower and bathroom on the first floor, plus a toilet upstairs. The bathtub was great, but the bathroom sink was narrow and might feel tight for larger people. One concern was the escalator, which had no safety measures and could be dangerous for children going up and down. Overall it was convenient, comfortable, and quiet. I’d choose this chain guesthouse again. (2025) Check-in in November 2014.

It was so lovely and stylish that I could imagine wanting to live there. The place was clean, and the bedding was comfortable enough for a really good night's sleep. We stayed multiple nights, and by the second day I couldn't wait to get back to the house. It’s close to the station and bus stops, with easy access to lots of places, yet tucked one street in from the main road, so it stayed quiet. I loved all the details, from the little garden to the upstairs bookshelf. Even the living room chair was so comfortable I could have stayed sitting in it all day. The directions from Kyoto Station to the reception desk were clear and detailed, and the reception staff were kind and polite. I was glad we booked here. Of all the machiya I’ve stayed in, this was the nicest, and it made the trip wonderful. Thank you!

The house was quiet and relaxing for our family, and we could enjoy our time without worrying about the hour. It was spacious, clean, and really comfortable, with a wonderful atmosphere as soon as you walked in. When the projector gave us trouble, staff came right over after we contacted them and were a huge help. Shijo-Omiya Station is close, and there are lots of good places to eat nearby, including Moritaya and Yaoiso. We enjoyed strolling around the townhouse, picking up groceries, and making meals at home. It really felt like living in Kyoto! I’d love to stay here again 😊
