The cultural activities made our three nights at Nishiyama Ryokan feel especially memorable. We got to enjoy both a complimentary tea ceremony and a samurai show, which added something really unique to the stay. The room was spotless, neatly arranged, and very comfortable. From the moment we arrived, the reception team and staff were welcoming, kind, and attentive, and we felt at home right away. Every detail seemed thoughtfully handled. We had such a wonderful time and would absolutely return. Highly recommended!

The staff’s kindness stood out most. During a cold snap in Kyoto, one of the gentlemen offered us hand warmers each morning as we headed out, and everyone made us feel genuinely welcome and looked after. The ryokan was also in a handy spot, within walking distance of Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, Kyoto Imperial Palace, Nishiki market, Teramachi-dori, lots of nice boulangeries, and several bus and subway lines. We found the facilities great too. Our room was spacious, the futons comfortable, and everything was spotless. The daily public baths felt luxurious, and the laundry machines were free to use. They also had lovely cultural events for guests, all free. I only wish we’d been able to join the Sunday tour they organized. Maybe next time! tea ceremony、daily hand warmers、and thank you all so much for your kindness!

The Japanese breakfast was so delicious, definitely a great way to start the day, and I’d recommend the morning tea ceremony too. It was fun and informative. The onsen was peaceful and lovely, and everyone was really helpful. Check-in through checkout went smoothly: I was welcomed with tea and a hot towel, then someone personally showed me to my room and explained everything. Thanks again, I’ll be recommending this place!

We joined the Sunday walking tour, which took us to traditional places and taught us about local culture we probably wouldn’t have found on our own. The Japanese-style breakfast was beautifully arranged, delicate, and refined, and really conveyed omotenashi. We spent one night at Nishiyama Ryokan, and the staff were so kind and friendly that we felt welcome straight away. The location was great for us too. Coffee shops and pottery stores we enjoyed were within walking distance, and City Hall seemed close by.

The activities were a special part of our two weeks moving around Japan. This was the only ryokan where we found regular little cultural events, including tea ceremony, kembu (Japanese swordplay theatre), origami, and local walking tours. If you’re booking or already have a room, check their instagram/calendar so you don’t miss an activity you want to join. We chose a regular double room, which was stylish, roomy, and practical. The thick futons and blankets kept us warm. The public baths are separated by gender, and the onsen comfortably fits two or three adults at a time. I did think the water could’ve been hotter, though, but really, no complaints! We added the Japanese-style breakfast, which that morning was the steamed set, with an interesting mix of seasonal vegetables. My favorites were the sato imo (Japanese yam), burdock root, and fruit with jelly. The main steamed vegetable dish in the box was just alright. After breakfast, you can wander through the beautiful moss garden and join the morning tea ceremony, where they teach you to prepare and serve usucha in a formal tea ceremony. This ryokan is steeped in tradition, and they make sure guests can take part.
