The main drawback for us was the long bus ride from the station, though there's a bus stop nearby. Still, this was a great place for dorm-style accommodation. We had a Japanese-style room to ourselves, and the bathrooms were clean, modern, and pleasant. Laundry was available, the staff were friendly, and the information they gave us was clear. There are also some great restaurants in the neighborhood, and Ginkakuji is nearby and lovely.

We spent a week here and came away with a really good impression. It's outside the city center, but Kyoto's buses make it easy to get around. The hostel is simple, though it has the things a traveler needs, and the hosts did a lot to make our time in Kyoto enjoyable. Thanks for being so warm and welcoming.

We had a great couple of nights at Hostel Ginkakuji. There were lots of travelers around, and the people running the place were really kind and could point us toward nice places in Kyoto. Remember to bring your own toothbrush and other toiletries, since they don't supply them. We couldn't quite work out the shower at first, but we didn't ask anyone for help, so that's our fault.

We mostly used the place to sleep and shower, and it worked well for that. The private rooms each had their own AC controls, and the walls blocked sound well at night. It's in a quiet neighborhood. Renting bikes to explore the city was great, and the portable WiFi was useful for sightseeing. There was a kitchen and washer, though none of us tried either.

The owners were the best part of our stay, always friendly and ready to help. The clean, organized facilities had a Kyoto feel to them, and sleeping on tatami with a futon felt properly Japanese. Even in the cold of winter I was warm and comfortable. The free portable WiFi also made getting around Kyoto much easier.
