A quiet neighborhood and polite staff made for a great stay. I especially looked forward to happy hour and the late-night snack, and the Japanese breakfast was simple and traditional. The station and mall are close, with bus and train lines nearby. The room and shower were small, but that’s Japan and you get what you pay for. No complaints.

This shoebox room was under 12 by 12 feet, and I won’t even get into the bathroom, which was about the size of a child’s crib. It’s not suitable for seniors or families. The fan was dirty. We used Google Translate to work out the air-conditioning controls. There was no room for luggage, and I’m not bending down to reach bags on the floor. We moved the bed to get to both sides, but still had to walk sideways to get into and around the room.

They charged us ¥200 per night for the city tax, even though we live in Japan. Japanese friends who checked in after us weren’t asked to pay anything extra.

The rooms were clean and well equipped, and the hotel is in a handy spot, about a 10-minute walk from Kyoto’s main station. Breakfast was enough, though there wasn’t a big selection. What put us off was how unwilling most staff seemed to help, along with their unfriendly manner. It came across as if they couldn’t be bothered speaking English with us.

Staff were very kind and helpful. There’s a huge mall right next door if you want to shop, and the excellent location makes it easy to get around Kyoto by bus or train.
