The advertised amenities, like the free Toji temple tour, sound fun, but they don’t make up for paying this much and getting a bad night’s rest because of the room quality. If you’re unlucky, you may end up in a room with a terribly pungent smell. We booked two rooms and asked if one could be changed. The staff were kind about switching it, but the new room smelled the same. Don’t waste your money staying here.

It’s not near the popular tourist area, but the room was clean and a reasonable size with a sensible layout. If you’re driving, the parking lot across the street has the best, or at least least expensive, parking fee around.

The room had a noticeable odor, and it wasn’t cleaned properly. They took care of the towels and trash, but little else. There wasn’t any coffee or tea in the room, and the service overall fell short.

We loved the location and were really impressed by the breakfast concept and the spiritual design. The staff were friendly, and the whole stay felt just right for us.

The sento kit was my favorite part. We rented it and went to a local Showa-style sento nearby. The hotel also has a small self-service shop open 24 hours for snacks, drinks, and omiyage, plus local temple tours and a board with ideas for things to eat, see, and do. It’s not far from Kyoto Station, and the staff were welcoming, spoke great English, and helped with our questions. Our room was on the small side, but there was space for our luggage, and it had a bath.
