The futons upstairs are mattresses on the floor, not the low western-style beds people sometimes call futons. Downstairs you’ll find the other facilities, including a washer but no dryer, plus a nice shower. There’s Wi-Fi and a handy phone you can take out and use as your own, the kind I’ve seen at many Japanese hotels. Gion Corner is nearby, a good place to go geisha spotting at night, and there are restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets around. The place itself is beautiful, though the self check-in means you need to follow the instructions. I found the low Japanese tables uncomfortable to sit around, especially for having a drink in the evening. It’s certainly an experience, but not a comfortable spot to lounge.

The street is quiet, and I liked saying hello to the schoolchildren across the way each morning. Temples and visitors from all over are nearby, with some just a five-minute walk and others farther off. The house itself mixes traditional Japanese and modern styles across two floors. There’s a kitchen, a lovely traditional living room, toilet, and shower downstairs. Upstairs is a traditional bedroom with floor mattresses, with room for up to five people. I’d recommend it for families. 👍🏻

It’s very quiet here. Just know that you’ll need to bring your own face wash and pajamas, and the convenience store is about a 3-5 minute walk away.

Looks like an old house that’s been renovated. It’s pretty comfortable to stay in, though the outside could use some work.
