Kyoto Machiya Zeniyacho

We were two families and booked the two apartments next to each other. The location worked really well, with a short walk to 7 Eleven, lots of shops, and a 15-minute walk to the train station with our suitcases on the way to Tokyo. The welcome ceremony was a lovely touch, and the hand warmers and gifts for the children were so kind. The apartments had everything we needed to enjoy our stay and experience a gorgeous piece of traditional Japanese life.

The staff were helpful and accommodating, and the Machiya Japanese townhouse was beautiful. We really enjoyed the private onsens, tatami floors, and complimentary matcha and drinks in the fridge. It was a blissful stay, and my wife and I highly recommend it if you're in Kyoto.

My wife and I stayed in the Ai suite on our recent Japan vacation, and we'd consider another Kyoto Machiya property in the future. The price is higher than a hotel, but we felt the experience was worth it. Coming back to this machiya each night was a big part of what made Kyoto so enjoyable and memorable for us. The bathroom area was our favorite, with a luxurious feel, an indoor bath, stand-up shower, and spacious sink area. The outdoor bath was amazing too. The living room and kitchen were small by North-American standards, but quaint, thoughtfully laid out, and well-decorated. The interior felt lived-in but well maintained. It's conveniently located near Gojo station in a quiet residential neighbourhood. My wife booked it after seeing the photos and amenities listed on the website, especially the outdoor bath. We followed the check-in instructions and got the entry code. Our host Sarah came by soon after to finish check-in. She was polite, accommodating, and sweet. We quickly found out she'd spent time in Canada near where we live, and bonded over that. Thanks to Sarah and the entire Kyoto Machiya team for such an amazing time!

The location was good, the premises comfortable, and they were very helpful during the online booking. The kaiseki meals, though, were cold and inedible, the worst part of our Kyoto experience. We had to order Uber Eats afterward, and weren't allowed a refund for the meals planned for the next day. Do yourself a favour and absolutely do NOT book them.
