Kyo-no-Yado Sangen Ninenzaka

Kyo no Yado is in a really peaceful spot, tucked just around the corner from a landmark and close to the famous Yasaka Pagoda. It’s also a great place to stay if you want something traditional in Kyoto. The rooms are in a very tight street, so it makes sense to have an Uber or taxi drop you on a nearby main road, though the narrow street is great for pictures. You can come and go at any time, which made our day trip to Nara easy. The staff are very friendly and helpful with questions, and they speak enough English to get by, so there’s no need to feel shy about talking to them. They reply to emails really promptly from the time you book. Breakfast is available for a fee if you request it the day before, and they also have their own list of places to eat and landmarks to visit. Keep up the great work!

Staying in the Ninenzaka area made the Kyoto visit special. We could wander through the streets whenever we liked, and the rooftop view from the ryokan was amazing. The tatami mats were wonderful to sleep on, the best sleep I’ve had in Japan so far, and the rooms and facilities were clean and comfortable. The staff gave us excellent service. We’re especially grateful to the male staff member who was generous, thoughtful, and kind, served us delicious breakfasts, and gave us hand warmers on cold days. We had a truly memorable stay at Kyo no Yado Sangen Ninenzaka ryokan and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a traditional Japanese ryokan experience in Kyoto. The rooftop view is breathtaking, the location is unbeatable, and the bath was the most relaxing one I’ve ever had. I stayed two nights and would definitely return to Kyoto and stay here again. It felt like home, only better: peaceful, cozy, quiet, and clean, with wonderful caretakers who made me feel genuinely welcome. Breakfast has been one of my favorite meals in Japan so far. Thank you so much to the staff! P.s. Since it’s in the historic Ninenzaka district, you have to walk a little with your luggage. Pack light if you can :)

The rooftop is a lovely place to hang out, with a spectacular view across Kyoto, and guests can use the rooftop onsen too. Many attractions are an easy walk away. Inside, everything was clean and comfortable, and the staff were so welcoming. They even shared ideas for how to spend our time in the city. I can't recommend it enough.
