We stayed in Holomachi, an old traditional house with incredible beauty. There isn’t much space, so I’d bring minimal baggage, and the stairs to the bedrooms are awkward and steep. Keep that in mind if stairs are difficult for you, though they’re part of the house’s character. The service was amazing, with perfect attention to detail and really friendly staff who did everything they could to improve our stay. It’s in a quiet area, a reasonable walk from subway stations. Sara welcomed all of us warmly on our first day, then held a tea ceremony after we’d settled in. We loved it, and the kids got to absorb some of the culture in a one-to-one experience. Breakfast arrived by bento at 8am on the dot each morning, with Western or Japanese options. The Western one still felt very Japanese, and the delicate, varied food seemed better suited to adults than kids. We’d happily stay again and recommend trying it.

The staff were helpful and kept everything immaculate, and Kyoisuke was even more beautiful architecturally than we expected. After long days walking around the city, having a private outdoor onsen was amazing. We absolutely loved staying here and highly recommend it.

They let us know early in the morning that our room was ready well before check-in, and staff were quick to respond and help throughout our stay. After we arrived, they gave us a detailed introduction to Kyoto and the hotel's matcha tea ceremony. That became a highlight for our children. The location was perfect and the room had everything we needed. Their service impressed us so much that this was the best part of our trip to Japan. Highly recommended!

The neighborhood was very quiet, but we were still close to a main shopping street and its restaurants. Our rooms at Kyoisuke machiya were clean and beautiful. The staff were welcoming and helped forward our luggage to Tokyo. Their office is right across from the machiya rooms, which made it easy to ask for anything we needed. Highly recommend!

The machiya was beautiful and gave me a wonderful cultural immersion experience. It was the highlight of my whole trip. I'd highly recommend it to anyone coming to Kyoto.
