The standout was the care from the staff, especially Fuko san, who worked hard to make sure we were looked after. She was so nice and modest, even handling our shoes for us. The service, food, amenities, and central spot by the historic bridge made the 300+ price for two people feel worthwhile, though it was a splurge. As someone used to being independent in the US, being served felt embarrassing at first, but that’s part of Japanese hospitality and I’d say embrace it. The dinner course was fantastic and they accommodated my dietary preference. I’d forgotten to mention that I dislike raw fish, so the chef made up for it by serving me sushi instead. The private onsen cost extra and was magical, open air over the river. It was cold outside, but the hot water made bathing outdoors comfortable. I loved the clean, comfortable room, especially the tatami and futon. There was tea and onigiri for a midnight snack, and breakfast was scrumptious too. I think I gained a few pounds from all the eating. My only complaint was the bidet. The wand didn't retract all the way, and it wasn't working properly. I'd definitely stay at this ryokan again.

The river view and nearby tourist spots within walking distance were lovely, and the onsens were just right. The rooms were tidy and as described. We had a delicious, artistic multi-course dinner, so come ready to try things with an open mind. Service was 11/10. There was a slight language barrier, but communicating and enjoying our stay wasn't a problem. Well worth the price.

The meals were a highlight: they got both our vegetarian and vegan requests right, from dinner in the room to breakfast the next morning. The staff were kind, professional, and went out of their way for us despite a bit of a language barrier. The room was fantastic, and the private onsen was a great experience. I'd suggest checking in early so you have time for tea and can settle in quietly. I did wish someone had explained the dishes and customs in more detail. I understand language may get in the way, and perhaps they usually explain more when there aren't special meal requests. Still, it was a unique, memorable stay, and I'd absolutely recommend it.

The setting is beautiful, with easy access to the bamboo forest and monkey park. It’s a great choice for a traditional Japanese stay. Staff accommodated the food allergies in our group, and a few of them spoke English, which helped. Knowing some Japanese would be useful.
