The room had a smell they blamed on the new tatami, and I found hair in the bedding. There's no elevator, and the front door doesn't lock or close at night. The front desk closes at 10 pm, so nobody is there to watch the entrance, though there is a camera. Arriving before 2 pm also means no front desk or luggage storage, even after the ten-minute walk. On the plus side, it's inexpensive and in a residential area that felt quite safe and quiet, with a more authentic Kyoto feel. You also get the tatami experience.

The tatami mats made it feel like I was experiencing real Japan, which was my favorite part. Service was very friendly, and the location was great. The price was excellent too, so I might come back. Kyoto is hard not to love.

There was a disgusting blood mark on the mattress, the place smelled bad, and the WiFi was slower than my portable connection. No lift, and there were no staff before 3 pm. The staff couldn't understand English, and the service felt unprofessional. It was like a terrible Airbnb, not a well-organized hotel.
