Our host was incredibly helpful, taking us to and from Kyoto station, lending us bikes, and letting us leave our luggage until later. The bikes came in handy: we rode to Ginkakuji, then all the way down Kyoto's east side to Kiyomizu-dera and back. We went with the family, and staying in this old house was one of the trip's highlights. It was such fun. We'll stay here again next time we're in Kyoto. I'd suggest May, or October or November when the leaves are changing.

The owner was friendly, and the small machiya was clean and functional. It sleeps five on futons. The residential neighborhood was quiet, with very little going on and hardly any restaurants nearby. The location wasn't ideal for me, since I would have preferred somewhere closer to the town center.

It's very quiet here, about 15-20 minutes from the busy area, and I really liked that. I stayed five nights in a row. The place was super clean and had everything I needed as a traveler.
