Machiya Maya Gion

We loved the patio and the bath, which came with salts, in the upper level temple view suite. It was peaceful, even though so many famous sights are only a short walk away. We stayed in November 2024, and the staff were very friendly.

The home is old and very traditional, with delicate wood around the doorways and floors. I’d be cautious about bringing kids who might damage it, or lots of luggage. That wasn’t a problem for us, though. Just note there’s no reception staff after your check-in time. When we emailed with a question about our luggage on checkout day, we got a quick and helpful reply. The Machiya Maya Garden suite is beautiful. It’s on the second floor, and the outdoor deck between the kitchen and the main bedroom and bathtub makes it feel like you’re up in the trees.

Right in the heart of Gion, this was a beautiful stay. The temple view room is amazing, especially if you love baths. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Roxana and Brad, thank you so much! We stayed in the Japanese Garden Suite at Brad's house, and can’t wait to return. Roxana welcomed us in person and was so helpful. Communication before arrival was excellent, and the photos showed the house just as it really is. It was immaculate, beautifully decorated, and a lovely balance of traditional and modern. We were four people and had plenty of room. The western bed and Japanese futons were comfortable, and all the amenities worked perfectly. The little atrium between the dining room and bedroom was a favorite, as were the shower and bath. The location is unbelievable, right in the centre of Gion and within walking distance of Geiko district and the Yasaka Shrine. Buses 100 and 206 are just around the corner and go all over the city. A holiday rental of a lifetime!
