Candeo Hotels Matsuyama Okaido

The location was the one clear upside, with plenty of places to eat nearby. Outside, the hotel looks sleek and modern, but the impression faded quickly once we went in. For some reason, the smoking room is right at lobby level, and the corridor is filled with cigarette smell. Our room felt like a humid box. After one night we felt marinated. The bathroom ventilation didn't work, the room never felt clean, and we couldn't open the window to air it out. I think more than two nights would leave you like a damp piece of laundry. Breakfast was a mess. We went down at 7:15am, basically dawn, and still waited 15 minutes for a seat. The selection wasn't worth that wait. The entrance was confusing too: the wooden panel is the one that opens, not the glass one. Great location, but the stay was humid, smoky, crowded, and confusing. I wouldn't come back.

The spa was a highlight of my stay, a relaxing and luxurious place to unwind after exploring Matsuyama. I also woke up to beautiful views from my room, and breakfast had a wide range of delicious options that made a great start to my day. This was my third trip to Japan, and Candeo Hotels Matsuyama Okaido is easily the best hotel I've stayed at in the country. From the moment I arrived, the staff made me feel welcome. They were kind, spoke excellent English, and made check-in and asking for recommendations easy. Every interaction was a pleasure. The stay made my trip special, and I can't recommend this hotel enough. I'll definitely come back on my next visit to Japan. Thank you to the whole team!

The skyspa was decent, the location was good, and my brief check-in interaction with the staff went well. But the room was more like a prison cell than a hotel room. The bed was literally a rock, the bathroom smelled moldy, and with no way to open the window there was zero air circulation. That feels illegal. It gets the job done for a short stay in Matsuyama, but if you can avoid it, you probably should. You might get sick.

Breakfast was completely overwhelmed, with a hundred people waiting in line. There's no excuse for that. Other hotels had systems to manage how many guests could use the buffet. You also have to ask at the desk for coffee, and they'll only give you one per person. I guess you'd have to ask again the next day if you want another cup. This was one of the most expensive rooms of our seven-week trip, and I don't see how they can charge so much when you don't get much for your money. The room was somewhat larger, but nothing special.
