The streets and shops look lovely when their lights come on in the evening, and there’s a shrine nearby that’s worth visiting. Buses are easy to find, since the hotel isn’t close to the train station. Our room was tiny, with the mattresses pushed right together, so it might not work well if you have a lot of luggage. We missed the morning market and tea demonstration, so ask the receptionist for details.

We spent six nights at Mosiac Guesthouse and felt right at home. The staff were so friendly and helpful, and the place was always spotless and organized. I loved the tatami mats and the traditional deep Japanese steel tub, with modern comforts alongside the traditional style. We stopped by the bar and lounge for happy hour most evenings and had coffee there each morning. The guesthouse is in the oldest geisha district in the city, on a surreal, quaint street. On our second night, we even saw a geisha heading home from an event, which was pretty thrilling. The staff can point you to a bike rental place. We rented bikes and spent two days riding to temples west of the district, especially Arashiyama. That was an hour away by bike, and the ride had some lovely views and cool streets along the way.

I enjoyed the atmosphere and the district, though my traveling companion didn’t. He wanted more public space in the hostel and somewhere to prepare or eat food outside the bar downstairs.

Set in Kyoto’s oldest kagai (entertainment district), this is a lovely little guest house. The staff really make an effort to help you feel comfortable and enjoy your stay. I’ll definitely come back.

The room and bathroom were very clean, and the bed was good. The clerks were lovely, and both the man and woman spoke English. Very good service and a great place to stay in Kyoto. I recommend it.
