R Star Hostel Kyoto Japan

We liked the shoe-free entrance, where guests switch to the hostel’s flip-flops, and the bathroom was clean and spacious, with free toothbrushes and toothpaste. At around 42€ a night, or 21€ per person, the price was very economical. Still, our three nights, September 24-27, were a poor experience overall. Our room was at the back, with a window facing a wall and no natural light. That wasn’t clear in the booking photos. The manager couldn’t move us when we asked. We understood, but his manner felt rude, even though he didn’t speak English. With a translator, he even said we could go to another hotel. We really didn’t like the attitude. Breakfast was only bread, butter, jam, and instant coffee or tea. We ate it on the first day only. Check-out was at 10:00 AM, which we found unacceptable. At 9:59 they were already knocking. We asked for ten minutes to finish packing, but after five minutes the manager was asking us to leave and threatening fees. It was unpleasant and unnecessary, and my mother even thought there was an emergency. A room that size takes one to two hours to clean, so there should have been plenty of time to prepare it for the next guests. We felt the hostel had potential, but was poorly managed.
