The price helped set my expectations. For what they charge, I was satisfied, though I’d have rated the stay worse if it had cost more. My schedule changed at the last minute, so I booked one night on a whim as a solo traveler, mainly because I wanted to try a traditional Japanese room. The staff were friendly and helpful. They speak enough English for an easy check-in, but not enough for a casual chat about Kyoto. They still try to help with complicated city questions, though communicating can be a bit difficult. The room was spacious, which was nice for a Japanese hotel, but pretty run down. Surfaces you’d touch with your skin were clean, while cracks and corners had years of dirt and dust built up. Everything showed a lot of wear. Around the edges of the sink and toilet, the toilet room felt a little dirtier than I was comfortable with. The location is pretty good, a few minutes’ walk from the station and the busier parts of Kyoto. Walk a few extra blocks and it’s convenient, while the surrounding street stays fairly quiet with little foot traffic.

The location made it easy to get around Kyoto, and the room was lovely. We especially enjoyed the onsen and the incredibly tasty dinner and breakfast. Ganga looked after us so well, and all the staff were helpful. We had an amazing stay at Ryokan Kohro. Definitely stay here when visiting Kyoto!

We really enjoyed the friendly service, and she even helped me with my traditional Japanese dress. Dinner was a lovely eight-course traditional meal, which we paired with sake. The ryokan sits on a quiet street and has gorgeous, spacious rooms and public baths.

I loved getting to wear yukatas, sleep on futons, and try an authentic Japanese breakfast and dinner. The onsen was part of the experience too. The staff were welcoming and friendly, and they were prompt with meals and making up our beds. I stayed here in April and had a delightful time.

The room was dated and worn, and the cleanliness was a real problem. Dust and lint had collected all over the vents at the bottom of the sliding doors. Since we were sleeping on the floor, being right at eye level with it made things uncomfortable. The location was great, though, and the room had a nice grandma feel. I wouldn't recommend it.
