Ryokan Sawaya Honten

We enjoyed our stay at Ryokan Sawaya Honten. The rooms are quite spacious and have their own bathrooms, though there's also a public bath with a stone hot tub. The location works well, with good restaurants nearby and bus stops for getting into central Kyoto. I would come back, though the staff could be friendlier, especially when guests return. They often seemed to be looking at their phones.

The traditional breakfast was the highlight for me. The older couple serving it were so happy to share their hospitality that I felt genuinely honoured to be there. The room was beautiful and had what a guest needs, from souvenir socks to a modern toilet with a heated seat and all sorts of features. It blended traditional and modern touches nicely. I was excited to try a ryokan, and this place delivered. I was asked to remove my shoes just inside the front door, and check-in went smoothly.

After a long day walking and sightseeing, the public baths were the best part. The men's and women's baths are separate, and the hot water is great for unwinding. The rooms are traditional, spacious, clean, and had no mould. The staff are super friendly, and the value and location make this one of Kyoto's best ryokans. Highly recommend 😊👍

Such a cute Japanese Ryokan. The host was lovely, the food was good, and there were lots of beautiful yukata to choose from during the stay. I loved it.
