The host was welcoming and honest, and it’s a nice house with everything you need to feel at home. The amenities are hotel grade. It’s about a 20-minute bus ride from Kyoto station, with plenty of convenience stores nearby. Recommended.

You sleep on futons laid over tatami in this machiya, which has so many little touches it feels like a museum. After a hot shower, soaking at night in the beautiful half-outdoor bath was incredibly relaxing. The family who own Suzume-an are gracious hosts who went above and beyond to make our Kyoto stay better than we’d imagined. I can’t recommend staying here enough.
